Enemies also develop a highly unfortunate habit of impromptu teleportation, jumping from a relatively safe distance, to right next to you, in one frame. The frame-rate lags from time-to-time, something that doesn't cripple response times quite as ruinously as in Risen 2, though as you approach the business end of the game, Arcania's legs start to fail, with the last boss and encounters leading up to it proving arduous thanks to the staccato update. You'll get nowhere without learning to time blows, and to evade those of your enemies, and its nice to play a game that tests the player in this regard. Combat offers a robust challenge and for the majority of the adventure, functions moderately well. There's a bit of versatility to the combat, as the player can choose between single or two-handed weapons, a crossbow or good old-fashioned bow 'n' arrow (pleasingly, their release mechanisms are just slightly different), and even a trio of elemental magic spells. But for the most part, castle facades and scenic viewpoints hold together and the NPCs look okay. Landscapes are unspectacular and susceptible, on occasions, to severe fogging, and sometimes it rains indoors.

While the Risen games were technical calamities in their PS3 forms, Arcania is similarly low-rent, though over the course of the adventure, copes at least marginally better. Indeed, if you've sampled Risen 2: Dark Waters, then you'll be instantly at home with the manner in which the unnamed central protagonist moves, interacts and fights. They have plenty in common nautical-flavoured, exploration-driven third-person adventuring, wonky controls, suspect graphics and bonkers anti-gravity jumps. So similar in fact, that they share a whole hosts of strengths and weaknesses, even specific to their PS3 ports. Not surprisingly, it's very similar to Piranha Bytes' other treasure-chasing western RPG Risen. The game engine is particularly ill-suited to the hardware, and as a result, appears technically antiquated.
